Under the Rug to launch Glasgow’s new community & arts magazine: the Rug

We’re creating a new way for Glaswegians to connect & platform everyday stories from our communities and creatives. Welcome to the Rug, a practical bridge for every local, new arrival, and grassroots storyteller calling this city home.

There is a lot of noise online right now. Most of what we read, watch, and scroll past is dictated by invisible algorithms designed to harvest data rather than connect people. The Rug is an alternative to that.

We wanted to create something physical. Something real that you can hold in your hands and keep on a shelf as a permanent record. This magazine is designed to serve as a testament to the creatives and stories of Glaswegians, old & new – capturing the moments and voices that too often get brushed aside.

Our purpose is straightforward. We want to showcase the grassroots voices of Glasgow, putting a sharp lens on the lives that mainstream media ignores. We believe in building community through storytelling and looking honestly at practical solutions to local problems.

This is also a platform for grassroots arts from across the city, far away from corporate feeds and metrics. It’s about putting down our phones and connecting with something physical, and giving local work & stories the space & attention it deserves.

More than anything, we want this publication to act as a bridge. We are building connections between communities across Glasgow, linking creatives and audiences, storytellers and those who are made to feel voiceless, as well as independent theatres, local companies, and grassroots groups.

When we say Glaswegian, we mean everyone who calls this city home: old locals, new arrivals, and returning faces. You will also notice the use of Scots across our pages – an essential part of our voice and heritage, capturing the way people actually talk and think.

So grab a copy, pull up a chair, and join us as we peel back the Rug.
