Under The Rug is a community interest company dedicated to empowering the next generation of theatre makers in Glasgow. We believe that talent should never be limited by economic barriers, which is why we've created a supportive and collaborative space for artists to develop their craft. Our core mission is to provide the resources and opportunities that new creatives need to thrive, ensuring that every voice has the chance to be heard on stage.

We aim to be a supportive hub in the centre of Glasgow, that uplifts emerging theatre makers and ensures they can create without financial barriers. To ensure our emerging artists can focus purely on their creativity, we provide our rehearsal and table read spaces for free. Beyond the work itself, our space also includes a dedicated area for artists to relax, connect, and build a strong sense of community.

Our commitment to the local theatre scene extends beyond our walls. We publish a regular magazine that spotlights new shows, shares theatrical opportunities, and offers guidance and support for emerging artists across the city. We also offer comprehensive producing support for every stage of a production, from the initial spark of an idea to the final curtain call. At Under The Rug we're not just creating shows; we're building a vibrant, inclusive community where artists can grow, collaborate, and truly make theatre.

  • Mikael Lee Donaldson

    FOUNDER & ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

    I started Under the Rug in 2022 to create a space where unheard voices were put to the front of the conversation, and the stage.

    My days are spent steering our long-term vision, creating opportunities for Glasgow’s artists, leading our free community magazine, and ensuring our values are reflected in everything we do. I believe true change happens in conversation and dedicate my role & my own creative craft to ensure our theatre is accessible, inclusive, and unafraid to hold space for difficult conversations which can enact positive change.

  • Alex Paton

    ARTISTIC PRODUCER

    My role within the company is to help make our shows and events happen.

    I’m busy organising behind the scenes to make sure everything runs smoothly and to help keep all of our projects on track because trying to keep a group of creatives on schedule is no easy feat! I also get to use my creative experience to work with the rest of the team, deciding which productions and events go ahead and ensuring they align with our company and what we aim to bring to the community. I love that I get to work so closely on both the creative and organisational aspects of the company and get to have lots of fun bringing more exciting theatre to Glasgow!

    DIGITAL CONTENT MANAGER

    I’m the voice of Under the Rug in the digital world, capturing the behind-the-scenes magic and sharing it with you.

    From filming rehearsal snippets to designing our posters and managing our social feeds, I make sure our community stays connected even when they aren't in the building. I’m here to tell our story online and make sure our digital space feels just as welcoming and vibrant as our physical theatre.

  • Joseph Madders

    OPERATIONS COORDINATOR

    My role is to look after the running of the theatre space, organising bookings, and scheduling events.

    I keep everything tidy and make sure the day to day operations are running safely and smoothly. From sorting out rehearsal slots, managing donations, to answering your emails.

    Alongside this, I am also responsible for ensuring the hub embraces our community. Finding new ways to branch out into that community, so that we can support and tailor ourselves to the needs of Glasgow’s emerging artists.
