your new theatre hub

The Under the Rug Hub is your new go-to for free rehearsal space in Glasgow!

Our hub has transformed a simple office space into a working environment for emerging theatre makers, featuring a theatre space, rehearsal space, read through table, and community area. Our theatre holds 25 seats and is ideal for workshops, talks, and rehearsed readings.

We are very fortunate to be a part of the Outer Spaces network, an organisation that seeks to find artistic use for disused offices and commercial properties. We highly recommend you support their work so there can be more places like our hub in Glasgow!

  • There are two entrances to the hub.

One faces onto Waterloo Street with sliding doors. This is a ground floor entrance with steps and a accessibility lift to go up to the main atrium.

The second entrance faces Blythswood street with a narrow sliding door and two steps leading to main atrium.

Once inside the atrium there are both stairs and lifts leading to our floor.

Our floor and hub are fully accessible.

Bookings

Our goal is to provide a dedicated, accessible environment where you can focus on your craft and bring your artistic vision to life, entirely free of financial pressure.

To remain sustainable, we want to be transparent about how we work: we are a small team of volunteers who donate our personal time to open the space. Because our team balances this alongside full-time jobs and external commitments, we aren’t always able to accommodate every request.

How it works:

  • Rolling Bookings: We currently operate on a rolling two-month calendar.

  • Flexibility over Routine:To ensure the space remains available to as many people as possible, we focus on sporadic bookings or short-term residencies rather than long-term recurring slots.

We see this as a flexible home for emerging theatre makers; a place for a focused "sprint" or the occasional rehearsal rather than a permanent base.

A Note on the Edinburgh Fringe:

We know that preparing for the Fringe requires an extra level of dedication and intense, frequent rehearsals. We want to see as many emerging theatre makers as possible make it to the stage! If you are preparing for a Fringe run, please reach out via our booking form. While our capacity remains limited, we are open to discussing more frequent arrangements over the summer months to help you get show-ready.

  • - The Under the Rug hub is open between 10 AM and 8 PM. All bookings must take place within this time frame.

    - Bookings are up to two months in advance.

    - Whilst we can host workshops and rehearsals, this will be on a rolling basis. The Under the Rug hub cannot host long term or permanent repeat bookings at this time.

    - We cannot be a base for external theatre companies, clubs, societies.

    - Donation based cancellations from 48 hours before your booking may be subject to cancellation donation as set out in our donations policy

    - Urgent requests require a suggested donation of £10 an hour, to be sent before use of space.

    - Help us keep the lights on! By including a credit 'Supported by Under the Rug CIC' on any printed or digital materials for work developed here. You’re helping other emerging makers find a place to play. We really appreciate the support.

    • Arrival: Please arrive no earlier than 15 minutes before your booking.

    • Sign in/out: Make sure to sign in and out of the space, this helps us keep track of where you are!

    • Access: For safety and security, please do not enter the space unless a member of staff is present.

    • Space Care: Please leave the rehearsal space as you found it, ensuring all litter or mess is cleared away.

    • Respecting Neighbours: We share our floor with other artists. Please remain within the Under the Rug area and do not move or use furniture belonging to our neighbours.

    • Equipment and Costumes: Our items are here for you to use! Just let a member of the team know before you tuck in.

    • Damages: Please report any accidental damage to a staff member. Please note that you may be asked to cover reimbursement costs.

    • Departure: Please ensure your get out is completed within 15 minutes of your slot ending.

  • We believe that creativity should never be held back by financial barriers. That's why we offer our versatile rehearsal space for free or affordable rates depending on your situation.

Our space is flexible and can be adapted to fit your needs. Our standard theatre setting offers space measuring 4m by 9m. This can extended for larger rehearsals to 10m by 9m .

We have chairs, tables, and curtains for division.

We also have a community area for you to relax and rest during your busy rehearsals.

  • Finding the right space for a focused table read or a key production meeting can be a challenge. We provide a professional, community-focused space.

Equipped with 25 chairs, several large tables, and a projector screen with projector.

  • Our space is more than just a place to rehearse, we can also run small theatrical events! From rehearsed readings, dramatic sharings, to show cases, we’re here to give you a platform.

We offer a 25 seat theatre space with basic lighting and speakers. We have black backdrop curtains and use of a projector too.

Emerging Artists

The rising cost of rehearsal space is often a significant barrier, preventing emerging artists from either starting their journeys or taking the next step in their careers. We believe that creativity should be accessible to everyone, not hidden behind a financial wall. Below is how we operate the hub:

  • Free for Emerging Artists:Our space is entirely free for unfunded individuals, artists, and companies. We are here to provide that vital "leg up" to help you move your practice to the next stage.

  • Community Donations:If you are using the space for profit-generating work, or if your project is currently receiving external funding, we invite you to contribute a donation in line with our Donation Policy.

Whilst we aim to keep this space free and affordable to grassroots and emerging artists, we are not a funded organisation and running this space does not come without cost. Which is why we ask for you donations to help us keep these costs down and to continue to offer our space for free.

These donations are reinvested directly into the community. They allow us to maintain a free to use environment for others and fund our broader initiatives, such as the Under the Rug community magazine. When you donate, you aren't just booking a space, you’re uplifting your local creative ecosystem.

  • Please fill in our booking request form.

This form is to enquire about the hiring of the hub and as such does not act as a guarantee of booking.

Once the form has been submitted it will be reviewed by our operations team to see if the request is fulfillable.

Please submit your request at least 14 days in advance. We aim to respond to all enquiries within 5 working days.

As a small team our form is monitored intermittently, if you need space urgently then email us at enquiries@undertherug.co.uk with the subject URGENT BOOKING. Please note urgent requests require a suggested donation of £10 an hour to cover staff costs.

  • If we are able to accommodate you we will contact you via email and pencil in your booking (this is not yet confirmed), we will then forward you our space agreement and ask you to submit a risk assessment. We will also require at least one member of your group to hold P.L.I (Public Liability Insurance). Once we have received the required documents we will then email to confirm your booking.

If we can partially accommodate your request we will first email you back with slots we have available. If you agree to the changes we will follow the same procedure as above.

In the event we cannot accommodate your booking, we will let you know at the earliest available opportunity.
