No massive sets, just brilliant local performers having a blast – a quick look at why nights like Belters keep Glasgow's grassroots scene thriving.
If you’ve spent any time knocking about Glasgow’s independent theatre scene, you quickly realise that the real heartbeat of the city isn’t always found on the massive commercial stages. It’s tucked away in venues like 18 Candleriggs, driven by grassroots companies running entirely on community and a love for the craft of theatre-making.
Enter Ripple Theatre Company and their powerhouse cabaret night, Belters.
From the second you walk in you're greeted with an infectious, room-wide warmth. It’s a low-pressure, get-up-and-go evening of vocal talent, comedic showtunes, and those massive anthems that you canny help but quietly mouth along to from the second row.
What makes Belters so refreshing is that it completely strips away the heavy, over-engineered staging you sometimes get elsewhere. There are no massive sets or complex visual gimmicks – it’s just brilliant local performers and an audience that’s right there with them, cheering them on line by line. It turns a standard evening out into a shared room full of collective celebration.
This was the third Belters night put on by the company, with the previous evenings having taken place in June & April this past year. What was interesting to see was the amount of support they received form the local community who chipped in with prizes for their raffle fundraiser. There was prized from Studio 70, tickets to fellow grassroots theatre shows, and ‘ghouly’ baskets made up by the team to highlight a few.
And honestly, nights like this are so much more than just a fun excuse to hear some great singing. They are an absolute lifeline for our creative community. Independent showcases give emerging actors and vocalists the freedom to take risks, try out material they'd never normally get cast in, and hone their craft in front of an audience that genuinely wants them to succeed.
Ripple’s dedicated, passion-driven ethos is a brilliant reminder of why local grassroots work matters. They’re building spaces where Glasgow’s talent can just let loose and shine. If you get the chance to catch one of their upcoming cabarets, do yourself a favour and go – you’ll leave absolutely buzzin long after the final note echoes out.
In the meantime though, you can keep up with Ripple on Instagram.
